CHILLICOTHE, Ohio (AP) — A man who admitted kicking in the doors and looting more than two dozen Ohio churches to feed his heroin addiction has been sentenced to four years in prison.
Prosecutors say 26-year-old Cash Yoakem hit 29 churches in Ross County, south of Columbus, from October until his arrest in January. He stole anything he could pawn or sell, from televisions and copper wire to heirloom communion trays.
The Columbus Dispatch ( ) reports that in order to send Yoakem to prison, Ross County Common Pleas Court Judge Scott Nusbaum had to strike down a section of Ohio’s revamped sentencing laws intended to keep most non-violent, first-time felony offenders out of prison.
Yoakem had pleaded guilty in April to 44 counts of felony breaking-and-entering. He was sentenced Thursday in Chillicothe (chihl-ih-KAHTH’-ee).
