TOLEDO, Ohio (AP) — Toledo’s mayor is criticizing a newspaper report on the high number of blighted properties in the city and defends his plan to fix the problem.
Mayor D. Michael Collins on Tuesday blamed the municipal housing court for delays cleaning up troubled properties and claimed a weekend report by The Blade newspaper ( ) called “The Ugly Truth About Toledo” created a false perception about the city.
The report highlighted the large number of deteriorating houses and unkempt properties.
Collins says the city doesn’t need an additional government agency specifically to fight blight. He says there is a plan in place to turn around decades of neglect in some neighborhoods.
He complains that some cases have lingered for years in the municipal court with the city unable to force demolition.
