CLEVELAND (AP) — A person familiar with the hiring says Clippers assistant Tyronn Lue, who had two interviews to be Cleveland’s coach, will join new coach David Blatt’s staff.
Lue will be an associate head coach under Blatt in Cleveland, said the person who spoke Monday to the Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the team is not publicly commenting on the move.
Lue played guard for 11 seasons with seven NBA teams. He spent the past five years working on Doc Rivers’ staff in Boston and Los Angeles and is regarded as one of the league’s rising young coaches. The 37-year-old was one of the finalists to get Cleveland’s job, which went to Blatt last week.
Lue’s experience will be beneficial to Blatt, who has never coached in the U.S. but built a strong resume as one of Europe’s top coaches over the past 20 years.
