Ohio Day-care Center Operator Hit With Tax Charges

CLEVELAND (AP) — The operator of four northeast Ohio day care centers has been charged in federal court with keeping $293,000 in payroll taxes he deducted from workers’ pay checks that was supposed to go to the IRS.

Sixty-six-year-old Joel Friedman pleaded guilty in a separate case earlier this year to charges for his role in defrauding a suburban Cleveland charter school out of $400,000. He pleaded guilty to mail fraud, wire fraud and conspiracy to commit money laundering for submitting false invoice while serving as the school’s chairman. Sentencing has not been scheduled in the case.

A spokesman for the U.S. attorney’s office in Cleveland says the latest charges stem from Friedman deliberately failing to pay money owed to the IRS from 2008 to 2011.

Friedman’s attorney did not return calls.
