WESTON, W.Va. (AP) — Two men face murder charges stemming from the 1999 disappearance of a West Virginia woman and her daughter.

Media outlets report that a Lewis County grand jury charged both 51-year-old Charles Stephen Freeman of Archbold, Ohio, and 39-year-old Joseph Metz of Horner with two counts of first-degree murder.

Lewis County Circuit Court Judge Kurt Hall ordered the indictment unsealed Thursday morning following Freeman’s arrest on Wednesday in Ohio.

The men are accused of killing 69-year-old Maxine Stalnaker and her daughter, 46-year-old Mary Friend, both of the Jane Lew area. The women disappeared in December 1999. Their bodies haven’t been found.

Metz is Friend’s son and Stalnaker’s grandson.

Co-defendant David Hughes of Archbold pleaded guilty in February to conspiracy to commit armed robbery. He is awaiting sentencing.
