Hunter-Reay Tops After Early Mid-Ohio Qualifying

LEXINGTON, Ohio (AP) — Indianapolis 500 winner Ryan Hunter-Reay turned in the best time during IndyCar practice Friday at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course.

Hunter-Reay, who won the pole at last year’s race at Mid-Ohio, finished in 1:06.5316 for an average speed of 122.18 mph in the morning session.

The track record of 1:05.347 is held by Dario Franchitti and Gil de Ferran, who earned pole positions in 1999 and 2000, respectively.

Sebastien Bourdais was fastest in the afternoon session with a 1:06.8271. Bourdais won for the first time since 2007 in IndyCar’s last event two weeks ago in Toronto.

Points leader Helio Castroneves was 18th in the morning session and 11th in the afternoon. Teammate Will Power, second in the points chase, was 13th in each.
