SPRINGFIELD, Ohio (AP) — Air National Guard officials say the official designation of the 178th Wing formerly known as the 178th Fighter Wing will be recognized in a ceremony in western Ohio.
The ceremony will be Sunday afternoon at the Springfield Air National Guard Base.
Officials say the new designation took place administratively on July 1. The new designation reflects a mission change from operating fighter aircraft to conducting intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance and support missions.
The 178th Wing consists of more than 800 members. Officials say its intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance group provides intelligence support to the National Air and Space Intelligence Center.
The 178th also supports service members and ground force commanders in overseas locations through its reconnaissance mission.
