CIRCLEVILLE (AP) — A 30-year-old Ohio man casually flipped through a magazine at the defense table as prosecutors showed crime-scene photos of his 84-year-old grandfather, who he is accused of fatally shooting in March.
Shaun Lawson’s aggravated murder trial started Monday in Circleville, south of Columbus. Prosecutors say Lawson went to his grandfather’s home in rural Pickaway County to steal his guns and kill his own father, who wasn’t there.
Instead, they say, Lawson shot his grandfather, Thomas “Shorty” Whitson, three times in the face as he sat in his favorite easy chair.
Also charged in Whitson’s death are a 20-year-old man and two 17-year-old boys. All have pleaded not guilty. A fifth defendant pleaded guilty to aggravated burglary and grand theft, and was sentenced to seven years in prison.
