Protesters clash with police in Ukraine’s capital

KIEV, Ukraine (AP) — Hundreds of Ukrainian protesters threw rocks at police outside parliament, as opposition lawmakers accuse the government of stalling constitutional reform that would decrease president’s powers.

The confrontation Tuesday comes as a session to discuss those changes was delayed, and two days after protesters left a government building they had been occupying in Kiev after the release of scores of jailed activists.

Police responded with tear gas, as smoke from burning tires billowed over Kiev’s center on Wednesday. The clashes dimmed hope for an imminent solution to the nearly three monthlong crisis.

Opposition parties accuse President Viktor Yankovych’s party of stalling reforms that would give parliament greater powers. Yanukovych still remains popular in large parts of the country.
