Two people were injured at 8:34 p.m. today after they crashed while trying to avoid a deer on Putnam County Road M, west of Putnam County 6, northwest of Pandora, according to the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office.
The sheriff’s office said that David J. Birkemeier and his wife, Amy R. Birkemeier, were traveling westbound on Road M on a 2006 Harley Davidson Heritage motorcycle when a deer ran out in front of them. David Birkemeier applied the brakes to avoid the deer, with the motorcycle entering a slide and ejecting both occupants, the sheriff’s office said.
David Birkemeier was taken by ambulance to Mercy St. Rita’s Medical Center in Lima with severe injuries, according to the sheriff’s office, while Amy Birkemeier was taken by Life Flight medical helicopter to Mercy St. Vincent’s Medical Center in Toledo with critical injuries.
Both Birkemeiers were wearing helmets at the time of the crash, the sheriff’s office said.
Assisting at the scene were Putnam County and Columbus Grove EMS, Pandora/Riley Township Fire Department, and The Shop, Ottawa.
