OILERS BONUS: UF’s 2019 Opponents Preview

Ferris State

HEAD COACH: Tony Annese (8th year, 75-15).

2018 RECORD: 15-1 overall, 8-0 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.

WHEN & WHERE: 7:30 p.m. today, Ferris State.

PRESEASON PICK: 1st in GLIAC.

SERIES HISTORY: Ferris State leads 16-11.

KEY RETURNERS: Senior quarterback Jayru Campbell led all NCAA Division II quarterbacks with 1,460 rushing yards. He tallied 21 rushing scores and threw for 27 more while averaging up 292.7 yards of total offense. Senior defensive end Austin Edwards made 14 tackles for loss with 81/2 sacks last season.

FUN FACT: For the fourth time in five years, Ferris State has been tabbed as a top three team nationally in at least one preseason ranking.

Northwood

HEAD COACH: Leonard Haynes (4th year, 18-26)

2018 RECORD: 3-7 overall, 3-5 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.

WHEN & WHERE: 7 p.m. Sept. 14, Findlay.

PRESEASON PICK: 8th in GLIAC.

SERIES HISTORY: Northwood leads 12-10.

KEY RETURNERS: Junior left tackle Damon Sutton earned second-team all-GLIAC honors last season. Senior defensive back Dimitri Abro led the Timberwolves with 69 tackles, seven pass breakups, 21/2 sacks and two forced fumbles.

FUN FACT: Northwood and Findlay met 12 straight seasons from 1998-2009 with the Timberwolves going 9-3 in that span. They’ve split the four meetings since with Findlay winning in 2015 and 2016.

Ohio Dominican

HEAD COACH: Terry Cummings (4th year, 23-9).

2018 RECORD: 9-2 overall, 6-2 Great Midwest Athletic Conference.

WHEN & WHERE: 12:05 p.m., Sept. 21, Ohio Dominican.

PRESEASON PICK: 2nd in GMAC.

SERIES HISTORY: Ohio Dominican leads 6-1.

KEY RETURNERS: Sophomore quarterback Evan Ernst threw for 2,506 yards with 28 TDs to 7 INTs last season. Senior defensive back Alessio Amato had four picks last season — all in the first four weeks.

FUN FACT: Cummings served four years (2006-2010) as defensive coordinator at Findlay. His wife, Kate Cummings, coached the UF’s women’s basketball team (2006-13) to two NCAA tournament appearances.

Alderson Broaddus

HEAD COACH: Salvatore Dewalt (3rd year, 7-15).

2018 RECORD: 4-7 overall, 3-5 Great Midwest Athletic Conference.

WHEN & WHERE: 3 p.m. Sept. 28, at Findlay.

PRESEASON PICK:6th in GMAC.

SERIES HISTORY: Findlay leads 2-0.

KEY RETURNERS: Senior wide receiver Zack Lake turned 10 of his 48 catches (693 yards) into scores. Senior linebacker Michael Genalo recovered a GMAC-best five fumbles.

FUN FACT: Alderson Broaddus won the GMAC championship in 2016 — but with only Kentucky and Malone as the other active football members. The Battlers finished 9-2 overall that season.

Kentucky Wesleyan

HEAD COACH: Craig Yeast (1st year)

2018 RECORD: 3-7 overall, 2-6 Great Midwest Athletic Conference.

WHEN: 7 p.m. Oct. 5, Findlay.

PRESEASON PICK: 7th in GMAC.

SERIES HISTORY: Findlay leads 2-0.

KEY RETURNERS: Defensive back Alijah McGhee earned a first-team all-GMAC pick as a freshman last season after making six interceptions — two against Findlay in the season opener.

FUN FACT: Two of Yeast’s many coaching stops include serving as the wide receivers coach at Tiffin University (2012-14) and head coach of Fremont Ross.

Walsh

HEAD COACH: John Frankhouser (2nd year, 4-6).

2018 RECORD: 4-6 overall, 4-4 in Great Midwest Athletic Conference.

WHEN & WHERE: 1 p.m. Oct. 12, Walsh.

PRESEASON PICK: 5th in GMAC.

SERIES HISTORY: Findlay leads series 5-1.

KEY RETURNERS: Junior running back Koby Adu-Poku ran for 929 yards and 11 touchdowns last season as a first-team all-GMAC pick. His 136.6 all-purpose yards per game ranked third in the league.

FUN FACT: Walsh shared Canton’s Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium with Malone up until this season when the Pioneers announced its decision in February to drop football.

Hillsdale

HEAD COACH: Keith Otterbein (18th year, 108-81).

2018 RECORD: 10-3 overall, 8-0 Great Midwest Athletic Conference.

WHEN & WHERE: 12 p.m. Oct. 19, Findlay.

PRESEASON PICK: 1st in GMAC.

SERIES HISTORY: Hillsdale leads series 17-11.

KEY RETURNERS: Senior offensive lineman Mark Konkle was a first-team all-GMAC pick. He helped pave the way for senior running back David Graham to total 939 yards and 16 touchdowns.

FUN FACT: Hillsdale captured its first outright league title since 2011 and made its first D-II playoff appearance since 2010. The Chargers beat Kutztown 40-26 in their postseason opener before falling to Notre Dame (Ohio) 19-14.

Notre Dame College

HEAD COACH: Mike Jacobs (4th year, 30-6).

2018 RECORD: 13-1 overall, 10-0 Mountain East Conference.

WHEN & WHERE: 12 p.m. Oct. 26 at Notre Dame.

PRESEASON PICK: 1st in MEC.

SERIES HISTORY: Findlay leads series 1-0.

KEY RETURNERS: Sophomore running back Jaleel McLaughlin finished third in the Harlon Hill Trophy voting — Division II’s Heisman Trophy — after running for 2,421 yards and 18 scores.

FUN FACT: Last year, Notre Dame completed a perfect regular season and went all the way to the Division II National semifinals, only to lose 30-24 to eventual champion Valdosta State.

Lake Erie

HEAD COACH: Reilly Murphy (1st year).

2018 RECORD: 0-11 overall, 0-8 Great Midwest Athletic Conference.

WHEN & WHERE: 1:30 p.m. Nov. 2, Lake Erie.

PRESEASON PICK: 8th in GMAC.

SERIES HISTORY: Findlay leads 6-1.

KEY RETURNERS: Junior defensive back Elems Ukwe is the GMAC’s top returning tackler after ranking third with 104 last season.

FUN FACT: The Storm are just 2-30 in the last three seasons but hope to get turned around under Murphy who was the offensive coordinator at D-II Fayetteville State last season.

Ashland

HEAD COACH: Lee Owens (15th year, 115-50).

2018 RECORD: 6-4 overall, 6-2 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.

WHEN & WHERE: 12 p.m. Nov. 9, Findlay.

PRESEASON PICK: 2nd, GLIAC.

SERIES HISTORY: Ashland leads 28-15.

KEY RETURNERS: Sophomore quarterback Austin Brenner was named GLIAC Freshman of the Year after leading the league in completion percentage (61.3) and punting average (41.3 yards per punt).

FUN FACT: Ashland, preseason No. 23, has appeared in the Division II coaches poll 71 times since 2000. The Eagles are also two wins away from 500 in program history.

Tiffin

HEAD COACH: Cris Reisert (1st year).

2018 RECORD: 9-2 overall, 6-2 Great Midwest Athletic Conference.

WHEN & WHERE: 12 p.m. Nov. 16, Findlay.

PRESEASON PICK: 4th in GMAC.

SERIES HISTORY: Findlay leads 26-1.

KEY RETURNERS: Junior running back Kyle Brunson missed the GMAC rushing title by 6 yards, finishing with 957 yards and 11 scores as a first-team all-league pick.

FUN FACT: Gary Goff helped turn the Dragons around, going 38-50 in eight seasons, but left to take the same job at Valdosta State — the defending D-II national champions. Reisert served as Ohio Dominican’s offensive coordinator the past two seasons.
