Using the wisdom of the “illuminati” and the authority of a “mikado,” Marathon Petroleum Corp.’s team won Hancock Literacy’s 30th annual Community Spelling Bee on Wednesday. The somewhat “tempestuous” contest, marked by occasional “vociferous” remarks, serves as a major fundraiser for Hancock Literacy, whose mission is to coordinate and support community initiatives promoting lifelong literacy. Three of the 13 teams made it to the sudden death round of the spelling bee, with Marathon winning on the word “roodebok,” a South African antelope. Other words from the sudden death round included “schloss” and “gauche.” Marathon’s team members included, from left, Dave Reynolds, Rachel Block, Ellen Bugay, Paula McRill, Becky Miller and Dave Burget.
