The Arts Partnership and the Marathon Center for the Performing Arts are collaborating to offer arts education programming, titled “Explore the Arts.”

To introduce the programming to the community, open houses will be held at the Marathon Center for the Performing Arts from 10 a.m. to noon Jan. 30; from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Jan. 31 and from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Feb. 4.

Guests of all ages will be able to participate in family-friendly activities, observe or take a sample class, take a self-guided tour of the center, meet the teaching artists, register for classes and enter a drawing to win a free class registration. There is no cost to attend.

Programming is available for youth in grades one through six, teens in grades seven through 12 and adults over 18. Each age group will have the opportunity to register for the following six-week courses:

  • Acting 1, designed specifically for the beginning actor, it will teach the fundamentals of the craft. Participants will discover the building blocks of acting through theater exercises, scenes and character work.
  • Improv 1, a class to explore how to be more spontaneous and learn how to perform on the spot. Participants will discover the basics of improvisation.
  • Musical Chorus/Theatre 1. In Musical Chorus 1, adults will work with a music director and live accompanist to learn new and old musical songs, hone vocal skills, develop performance techniques and work collaboratively to achieve a polished result. In Musical Theatre 1, teens and youth will work with a choreographer and vocal coach to strengthen dance technique and vocal quality while portraying emotional range and depth of character.

Adults will also have the opportunity to take Creative Writing, in which participants will explore a variety of creative writing techniques in order to gain confidence and experiment with fiction and nonfiction.
