Hancock County second half real estate taxes are due Friday or property owners may face a penalty, according to a news release from J. Steve Welton, Hancock County treasurer.
Payments may be made from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. today or Friday at the treasurer’s office. There is a drop box inside the county courthouse entry for individuals paying by check. Also, taxes may be paid at numerous banks and credit unions throughout the county.
Mailed payments must be postmarked with a U.S. Postal Service cancellation of the due date or earlier to be accepted without penalty. Postage machine dates will not be accepted as proof of date.
The state’s revised code states the taxpayer is responsible for any taxes due and failure to receive a tax bill does not avoid penalty and interest charges.
