SYCAMORE — A Sycamore man died after the pickup he was riding in drove into a flooded Spring Branch Run, south of Sycamore, early Monday morning, the Wyandot County Sheriff’s Office reported.
Johnathan K. Miller, 26, of Sycamore, was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the sheriff’s office.
Sheriff Michael Hetzel reported that Anthony C. Moler, 29, of Sycamore, was driving a 1998 Chevy truck south on Township Highway 136 between County Highways 43 and 44 at 1:19 a.m. when the truck struck an area of the roadway that had been washed away by floodwaters Sunday evening. The impact of hitting the hole in the road caused the truck to drive into the creek and submerge in the water.
Moler was able to get out of the truck and go for help, the sheriff’s office reported, but Miller was unable to escape the vehicle.
After the floodwaters receded, rescue units found the truck in Spring Branch Run about 100 yards west of the roadway with Miller still inside the truck, according to the sheriff’s office.
Wyandot County Coroner Peter Schuler was called to the scene, and Miller was taken to the Lucas-Batton Funeral Home.
Moler was treated at the scene by Sycamore EMS, the sheriff’s office reported. Neither person was wearing safety belts.
The accident remains under investigation, according to the sheriff’s office.
