BLUFFTON — Bluffton University’s Micah Roberson set a school record for pass receptions in a game with 16, but a fourth-quarter rally fell short as the Beavers dropped a 28-20 decision to Defiance College on Saturday in Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference play.
Roberson, an Ada graduate, caught a 2-yard touchdown pass from Conner Sheehan with 8:49 remaining, but turnover-plagued Bluffton, which trailed 28-7 early in the fourth quarter, dropped to 7-3 overall and 5-3 in conference play.
Roberson accounted for 121 yards on his 16 receptions. Roberson’s 14 catches against Franklin last season tied the previous record set by Mike Morris against Earlham in 1981.
McComb grad Cody Wilson rushed for 129 yards on 17 attempts for the Yellow Jackets (5-5, 4-4 HCAC) and scored on runs of 4 yards and 1 yard. Defiance quarterback Logan Scott tossed touchdown passes of 8 yards to Corey Bennett and 5 yards to DeVonte Cravins.
In addition to his touchdown pass to Roberson, the Beavers’ Sheehan hit on scoring tosses of 11 yards to Raphael Dell and 2 yards to Lucas Espitia.
Sheehan completed 33 of 52 passes for 301 yards but was intercepted four times.
