The University of Findlay women’s basketball team was picked for a third-place finish in their first season in the Great Midwest Athletic Conference as the preseason coaches’ poll was released Wednesday.
The Oilers are coming off a 13-15 season where they failed to make the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference tournament for the fourth straight season.
Ursuline, 23-8 overall and 13-1 in GMAC play a year ago, was picked to defend its league title with two first place votes and a total of 115 points.
Cedarville (109 points) earned three first place votes with UF close behind in third (101) with two first place votes received.
The Oilers return a wealth of experience with 13 upperclassmen — four seniors and nine juniors.
Senior guard Haley Horstman averaged a team-high 9.6 points per game while fellow senior guard Lynsey Englebrecht put in 9.1 ppg.
Junior forwards Anna Hintz (8.4 ppg) and Christa Puthoff (9.4) also had strong offensive years.

Women’s soccer ties
The University of Findlay women’s soccer team surrendered two Trevecca Nazarene goals in the final four minutes of regulation that sent the game into overtime.
Neither team scored after two 10-minute overtime periods, resulting in a 2-2 draw in Great Midwest Athletic Conference play Thursday at DeHaven Field.
The Oilers fell to 4-11-1 overall, 3-8-1 in the GMAC while the Trojans improved to 7-4-3, 5-4-3.
Sierra Peacock had both of UF’s goals off assists from Ashley Rings and Samantha Church.
Johnna Raby and Maddie Little each scored for TNU which outshot UF 14-5 overall.
Findlay goalkeeper Anna Money made two saves in each overtime period to finish with 12 total.

Men’s soccer wins
Kegan Winkler headed in the game-winning goal with three seconds remaining to lift the University of Findlay men’s soccer to a 2-1 Great Midwest Athletic Conference win over Trevecca Nazarene on Thursday at DeHaven Field.
Yardley Gonzalez assisted on what was Winkler’s first goal of the season.
The Oilers (10-4, 9-2 GMAC) also scored in the final minute of the first half when Josh Dickinson one-timed a header off a Josh Burton free kick to put them up 1-0.
Frank Down put TNU (6-5-2, 6-4-1) in the board six minutes into the second half, chipping one past UF goalie Ben Richter who notched seven saves on the afternoon.
