Gymnasts from Findlay, Patrick Henry and McComb will try to advance to next week’s OHSAA state meet when they compete in the Northwest District gymnastics championships beginning at 4:30 p.m. Friday at Bowling Green State University’s Anderson Arena.
The Trojans, Patriots and McComb’s Shelby Steinbrook will compete together on Friday beginning their day with the B flight of the floor exercise. There are no returning area state qualifiers, although Steinbrook was a state alternate a year ago after finishing sixth in the floor exercise.
Springfield is the defending district team champion. Other teams scheduled to compete in the 20-team event include Oregon Clay, Defiance, Hicksville, Holgate, Liberty Center, Maumee, Napoleon, Toledo Notre Dame Academy, Perrysburg, Toledo St. Ursula Academy, Sylvania Southview, Sylvania Northview, Tinora, Toledo Christian, Vermillion and Toledo Whitmer.
The top two teams and the top six individuals in each event and the all-around competition advance to next week’s OHSAA state meet at Hilliard Bradley High School.

Richards named
ADA — A week after setting the all-time NCAA Division III 800-meter run record at the Grand Valley State Big Meet, Ohio Northern University senior Emily Richards has been named the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association Division III Women’s National Track Athlete of the Week for her efforts at the Sliverston Invitational.
Richards was the first collegiate athlete across the finish line in the mile run on Friday evening and finished second overall in the event. The senior posted the sixth fastest time in Division III history in the event, finishing in 4:46.11.
Richards now owns the best time in the country in the 800-meter run, the 1-mile run and the 3,000-meter run.

DeVincentis honored
For the third time this season, University of Findlay track and field senior Alex DeVincentis (Liberty-Benton) has earned Great Midwest Athletic Conference Field Athlete of the Week.
DeVincentis earned the honor after setting a new conference record in the weight throw with a throw of 58-101/4, an NCAA Division II provisional qualifying mark and the 18th-best toss in the country this season. She also participated in the shot put and achieved a throw of 48-63/4, also a provisional qualifying throw.

Findlay skaters win
OXFORD — Skaters from the Findlay Silver Blades club captured three first-place finishes at the 2018 ISI Miami Open Skating Competition at Miami University.
Kiersten Heater and Leah Sellers won the girls 13-16 jump and spin gold. Heater also scored wins in the girls 13-14 Freestyle 6 division and the girls 13-16 Solo Compulsory Freestyle 6 division.

Chiow takes title
DAYTON — Liberty-Benton sixth-grader William Chiow won his weight class at the state elementary school wrestling tournament Saturday at Wright State University’s Nutter Center.
Chiow competed for the Cory-Rawson Wrestling Club over the weekend.
