NORWALK — Upper Sandusky’s Noah Clary will wrestle at Value City Arena for the third straight year.
This time, though, he’ll have company.
Senior Connor Johnston ripped off five straight consolation wins on his way to a third-place finish Saturday at the Division II district wrestling tournament at Norwalk.
The top four wrestlers in each weight class earned a trip to the OHSAA Division II state tournament in Columbus, which begins on Thursday.
A loser by default because of an illegal move in his first match Friday night, Johnston pinned Napoleon’s Sabastian Chavez in 2:23 in his first consolation match.
On Saturday, he whipped Wauseon’s Samuel Sosa 13-0 and pinned Lagrange Keystone’s Nick Hickman in 52 seconds to reach the consolation semifinals. He scored an 18-2 technical fall against Vermillion’s Tyler Bath in his go-to-state bout and edged Defiance’s Jackson Meter 9-8 to place third. He is now 48-6.
Clary will be looking for his first state medal in his third appearance.
He whipped Norwalk’s Gabe Phillips 18-3 in the semifinals and improved to 40-4 by beating Maumee’s Ryan Haas 13-3 to avenge last week’s loss in the sectional finals.
Wauseon dominated the tournament finishing with a 242-104 margin over Medina Buckeye. Upper Sandusky was ninth with 58 points.
