Two players who led their respective teams to a spot in the OHSAA state girls basketball tournament were among 13 area players honored as the Ohio Prep Sports Writers Association released its all-Ohio girls basketball selections for the 2017-18 season.
The teams were selected by a panel of sports media members from throughout the state.
Ottawa-Glandorf’s Kadie Hempfling and Ottoville’s Bridget Landin, whose teams will play in the state tournament at Value City Arena on Thursday, were first-team honorees in Division III and IV respectively. Liberty-Benton’s Savanah Richards was also a first-team pick.
Hempfling, who has helped O-G’s girls program win 102 games since her freshman year and make four straight trips to the state tournament, was a first teamer for the second straight year. The career scoring leader in O-G girls basketball history, the Bowling Green State University recruit averaged 14.2 points, 9.8 rebounds, 5.5 assists and 3.8 steals.
Richards, a junior point guard and the Blanchard Valley Conference Player of the Year, averaged 16.4 points, 5.4 rebounds, 5.7 assists and 3.7 steals per game. Elmwood senior post Zoe Shank, who averaged 19.8 points and 8.5 rebounds in leading the Royals to a share of the Northern Buckeye Conference championship was a third-team selection in Division III.
Landin led a group of 10 area players to land awards in Division IV.
The University of Findlay-bound senior averaged a double-double this season in leading the Big Green to a second straight trip to state. The multi-talented 6-foot senior, listed in the Ottoville program as a guard/forward/center, averaged 13.8 points 10.3 rebounds, 3.1 assists and 3.8 steals in leading the Big Green to a 22-2 record .
New Riegel senior wing Brianna Gillig netted second-team honors after leading the Blue Jackets with 24.3 points and 11.2 rebounds per game. Carey’s Sydney Kin made the third team after scoring 18.1 points with 11.6 rebounds per game.
Arcadia junior center Kennedy Pratt (15.9 ppg, 7.5 rpg), Hopewell-Loudon freshman MaKayla Elmore (24.8 ppg, 10.8 rpg) and North Baltimore senior Alivia Light (20.7 ppg) were special mention all-Ohio selections.
Area Division IV honorable mention selections included Bluffton’s Alivia Koenig (14.6 ppg), Columbus Grove’s Carlee McCluer (14.1 ppg), Leipsic’s Kierra Meyer (13.4 ppg) and Kalida’s Sarah Klausing (12.7 ppg).
