TOLEDO — Freshman Angelina Puente started her career with a bang as she tripled, hit a pair of singles and drove in four runs to lead Fostoria High School to a season-opening 21-0 romp over Toledo Waite on Saturday in a nonconference softball game.
Kyhra Baeder had a double among her three hits for the Redmen in support of Alex Talley’s three-hit pitching in the five-inning game.
Kyah Talley doubled and singled for Fostoria, which also got two singles each from Elisia Ledesma, Talley, Jennaleigh McCumber, Baleigh Robinson and Kaybriana Kleinmark.

VANLUE — Vanlue saw the good and the bad Saturday in a cold, wind-whipped split of a doubleheader to open the baseball season.
Jacob Kloepfer fanned eight batters and pitched a shutout in game one as the Wildcats defeated Ridgemont 7-0. Kloepfer singled and drove in a run, as did Treg Price.
The Golden Gophers rebounded to win game two 20-3 as Vanlue committed eight errors and allowed 13 walks. Price again singled and drove in a run.

ELIDA — Luke Burger got Elida’s 2018 baseball season off to a flying starting, throwing a five-inning no-hitter and belting a home run and a triple on Saturday in the Bulldogs’ 10-0 win over Leipsic.
A sophomore right-hander, Burger struck out 13 and walked three. He also smacked a two-run inside the park home run in the second inning, and put the run rule into effect with a two-run triple in the fifth.

LIMA — Lima Shawnee’s Jared Thomas earned the win on the mnound and drove in the winning run in the bottom of the eighth inning to earn the Indians an 8-7 win over Columbus Grove in Saturday’s season opening baseball matchup.
Thomas, Jake Hutchiuns and Justin Behnke all had two hits and drove in two runs for Lima Shawnee.Wyatt Sybert ( 2 RBI) and Dane Schroeder both had two hits for Grove.

LIMA — Fort Jennings’ Derek Luersman allowed two runs on five hits and had two hits and an RBI of his own in leading the Musketeers to a 5-2 win over Lima Senior in the fist game of Saturday’s nonleague doubleheader.
Lima Senior’s James Gaines eraned the win and Bryce Brinkley had two hits and drove in a run as the Spartans took the second game, 4-0.
