PEMBERVILE — Findlay’s Post 3 American Legion team got an MVP performance from Matt Boes and a near-milestone achievement for head coach Dana Dunbar in winning the championship of the Pemberville Legion Tournament over the weekend.

Boes was 9 for 13 over five games, with two doubles, two home run and 10 RBIs. The Tiffin Columbian graduate had three singles and drove in two runs in Sunday’s championship game, a 6-3 win over Pemberville. Nate Insley (RBI) and Brayden Wentling added two hits each. Trey Bame (1-1) earned the win with six strong innings; Donavan Magill pitched the seventh for the save.

Boes had one of his home runs during an 11-run third inning and collected half of his 10 RBIs earlier Sunday when Findlay pummeled Oak Harbor 13-1 in a five-inning semifinal that put Post 3 in the championship game. Angel Garcia drove in three runs with a double and two singles, Bame and Tyler St. Clair (2 RBI) added a double and a single each and Trent Reichelderfer (1-2) earned his first win in three decisions.

Boes belted a two-run homer, Reichelderfer homered, singled and plated three runs and Garcia (1B, 2B) and Ricky Buckingham (2-1B, 2 RBI) had two hits each in Saturday’s 9-1 win over Ashland.

Findlay won its tournament opener on Friday, riding the two-hit pitching of Wentling and the hitting of Garcia (2B, 3 RBI), Insley (2-2B, 2 RBI), Bame (1B, 2B, 2 RBI) and Boes (2B, RBI) to an 8-0 win over Oak Harbor.

Post 3 then faced Pemberville in Friday’s second game and suffered its only loss of the tournament, 8-5. Zach Kreais (2-1B), St. Clair (1B, 2B, 2 RBI) and Garcia (1B, 2B) had two hits each for Findlay. New Riegel’s Cole Noftz had two hits for Pemberville.

Findlay’s 4-1 showing in the tournament boosted Post 3’s record on the season to 9-9 and moved Dunbar, in his 24th season as head coach, to a 599-390 career record. Findlay was scheduled to play Milan Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. at the Marathon Diamonds. But Milan was a no-show at the Pemberville Tournament and reportedly no longer fields a team. A replacement opponent is being sought, but none was yet lined up as of Sunday night.
