ADA — Brock Martin scored a pair of touchdowns as Ohio Northern University opened the football season by doubling up Adrian College 34-17 in a nonconference game at Dial-Roberson Stadium.

Two touchdowns in a span of just seven seconds of the second quarter allowed the Polar Bears to take command.

With the game knotted at 7-7, Ohio Northern’s Chad Rex hauled in a 23-yard touchdown pass from Anthony McFadden with just 1:35 left until halftime to make it 13-7.

After the kickoff, ONU’s Jaymar Hines returned an interception 29 yards for touchdown giving the Polar Bears a 20-7 cushion at the break.

Martin scored on runs of 1 and 5 yards and Chase Rose hauled in a 9-yard touchdown pass from McFadden with 6:12 to play to seal the win.

Adrian’s touchdowns came on a Colton Randle 2-yard run in the first quarter and Emmanuel Stewart’s 12-yard TD scramble in the third frame.

ONU finished with 189 yards rushing and 132 passing. Martin led the ground game with 76 yards on 17 carries. McFadden was 9 of 18 passing for 132 yards.

Adrian’s Stewart led all rushers with 92 yards on 25 carries. Jarron McGaw grabbed four catches for 98 yards while quarterback Darius Royster hit 12 of 32 passes for 181 yards.

BLUFFTON — A slow start plagued Bluffton University in Saturday’s season opening 44-34 loss to Wooster.

After trailing 28-14 at halftime and 44-14 after three quarters, second-string quarterback Plummie Gardner began to find his rhythm. Starter Brandon Koch completed one pass on Bluffton’s (0-1) first possession, but did not remain at quarterback. Instead, Gardner completed 16 of 29 passes for 298 yards and five touchdowns.

Three of Gardner’s five touchdowns came in a 20-point fourth quarter. He found Lucas Espitia for 19- and 28-yard scores before finding DeAngelo Woods for a 13-yard TD to cut the deficit to 44-34 with 2:46 remaining.

Espitia finished with team-highs of seven receptions, 136 yards and three touchdowns and Adam Duncan caught a pair of passes for 75 yards and a TD for the Beavers.

Doniven Clark and Stephan Kosakowski each had an interception for Bluffton. Tyler Showalter led with 10 solo tackles and Isaac Zickafoose had two sacks.

Antonio Bailey led a strong ground game for Wooster (1-0) racking up 120 yards and a pair of touchdowns on 20 carries. Caden Croft completed 23 of 32 passes for 202 yards with two TDs.
