The University of Findlay volleyball team battled back in a big way to knock off Ashland 24-26, 21-25, 25-16, 25-22, 15-7 in Saturday’s nonconference match at Croy Gymnasium.

The Oilers (6-1) picked up momentum in the third set and never looked back as they were led by standout performances from their senior class.

Senior Kara Scherger (New Riegel) has a record-setting night as she posted 33 digs in the win, the third-highest single-game total in school history which moved her first place all time at Findlay with 1,487 career digs. Scherger surpassed the school record of 1,476, which was set by Jessica Luttfring from 1997-2000.

Senior Amanda Winner recorded a double-double with 21 kills and 11 digs while senior Hailee Olson registered 58 assists and five kills.

Juniors Shelby Kin (Carey) and Izzy Murphy also reached double digits in the kill category with 13 apiece while junior Molly Hammersmith and sophomore Madison Moore recorded seven kills each.

Junior Ally Duncan had 15 digs while sophomore Olivia Morrison posted 10 to aid the Oilers defensive effort.

On Friday, Winner registered 26 kills and Kin put away 22 in wins at home against Missouri-St. Louis and Ohio Valley to kick off the weekend.

The Oilers fought off Missouri-St. Louis 28-26, 23-25, 25-18, 23-25, 15-9 before posting a 25-20, 25-18, 25-11 Great Midwest Athletic Conference victory over Ohio Valley.

Winner also had 13 digs for the day, while Kin added nine blocks and two aces as Findlay, ranked 24th in the country in NCAA Division II, boosted its record to 5-1.

Olson handed out a total of 83 assists and Scherger came up with 25 digs.

Men’s soccer blanked

CALIFORNIA, Pa. — The University of Findlay men’s soccer team outshot California (Pa.) University 10-6 but the Oilers couldn’t put the ball in the back of the net as they dropped a 2-0 nonconference match to the Vulcans Saturday.

The Vulcans (1-0-1) got goals from Conner Griest and Abdulla Nuredini.

UF senior Josh Burton took seven of the 10 shots for Findlay.

Senior goalkeeper Nathan Sier recorded one save for the Oilers.

Findlay hits the road for a nonconference match at 4 p.m. on Thursday against Salem International University.

Men’s CC wins

BLUFFTON — The University of Findlay men’s cross country team opened its season by winning Bluffton University’s Back to Nature Invitational.

Jonathan Allen was second in the race in a time of 19:16.49 to help the Oilers top Ohio Northern 25-38 for first place. Bluffton was fifth with 126 points.

Ty Gleason (8th, 19:53.18) and Michael Taylor (9th, 19:54.53) also posted top 10 finishes for the Oilers.

Ohio Northern’s Ian McVey was the individual champion in 18:52.99.

UF’s Gabrielle Lawrence won the women’s race in 19:16.79, but the Oilers ended up finishing second to Ohio Northern 31-69. The host Beavers were third with 81 points.

Madilyn Greiner (Liberty-Benton) was next for the Oilers as she finished 16th in 21:04.2. Rue Whitmore (4th, 19:53.34) was the top finisher for Ohio Northern.
