BIG RAPIDS, Mich. — Jayru Campbell and No. 9 Ferris State’s souped up offense put up the first 31 points Saturday night in its 59-13 victory over the No. 19-ranked University of Findlay football team.

The junior dual-threat quarterback needed only three quarters to pile up 338 total yards, 96 rushing, and five touchdowns.

The Oilers, facing offensive inconsistencies, came away from Big Rapids, Michigan, feeling sour.

Ferris State (2-0) has now defeated Findlay (1-1) in five straight seasons.

“They beat us in every facet of the game, from coaching all the way down to playing,” UF coach Rob Keys said. “In the sight of early adversity in the season, we have to clean some things up and move forward.

“We’re going to find a lot out about what kind of team we are in 2018 moving forward coming off a loss like that, because it didn’t go as planned.”

Ferris State produced a 545-340 edge in total yards in an efficient manner of mixing in the run (267 yards) and the pass (278).

Campbell amassed 202 total yards, 70 rushing, and three touchdowns to give Ferris State a 24-0 halftime edge.

The Oilers forced a three-and-out to start the game. But a muffed punt return by UF’s Jacob Hill reignited Ferris State with just 28 yards to go.

Two plays later, Campbell found Keyondre Craig for an 18-yard touchdown pass to put Ferris State on the board first just 1:47 in.

The Oilers went three-and-out and Campbell went back to work, matching the Bulldogs 84 yards in 10 plays and finishing off the drive with a 1-yard touchdown plunge.

Campbell led FSU to a 31-yard field goal by Jackson Dieterle on their next drive and and later hit Derrick Portis for a 3-yard touchdown.

Campbell added a 74-yard touchdown pass to Sy Barnett in the third quarter while Marvin Campbell found the end zone on an 8-yard run.

“There aren’t too many positives,” Keys said. “We talked about having a fast start and I thought the defense went out and did an unbelievable job.

“…Our fast start compounded into their fast start. From there, when you get down to a team like that you’re going to have a tough time coming back.”

Findlay struggled mightily in the third-down department, converting 4 of 14 attempts.

When UF did sustain drives early, it came up empty. The Oilers were stopped on downs in FSU territory twice in the first half and didn’t score until Richard Wilson’s 1-yard plunge at the 8:07 mark in the third quarter.

One week after not needing to punt in a 69-19 blowout win over Kentucky Wesleyan, the Oilers trotted out punter Patrick Rusher six times, three in each half.

Findlay was a few men down in terms of receiving options with standout wide receiver Jason Moore inactive for the second straight week and 6-foot-5 junior receiver Drew Ogletree who left Week 1’s game due to injury.

“You take out two marquee receivers from your lineup, not to make an excuse, there’s no doubt, their production in the past, you miss it,” Keys said.

“At the same time, good football teams find ways to still produce regardless of who’s in the lineup.”

UF quarterback Rhys Gervais connected on 13 of 26 attempts for 99 yards.

“Rhys, for the most part, was fairly accurate tonight; just a lot of dropped passes,” Keys said.

Peter Norris, a Bowling Green State University transfer, led UF with 89 yards on six catches. He caught an 11-yard touchdown pass from backup Adam Bertke in the fourth quarter.

Demondre Blanks ran for all of his UF-high 62 yards late in the second half.

Michael Campbell added 41 yards on 10 carries.

Defensively for UF, Tyler Lee intercepted Jevon Shaw on a halfback pass and five players reached double digits in tackles led by Chewy Chukwuneke’s 12 stops.
