BLUFFTON — Bluffton scored the only first-quarter points and outscored Manchester offensively across all four quarters.

But the Spartans’ Dillon Nelson had a pair of pick-sixes, including the go-ahead fourth-quarter touchdown to propel Manchester past the Beavers 21-17 in Saturday’s Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference game.

Nelson first got the Spartans (3-4, 3-2 HCAC) on the board with a 40-yard interception return in the second quarter to tie the game at 7-7. His 43-yard pick-six with 7:07 left in the fourth quarter gave Manchester the final 21-17 lead.

Bluffton’s (1-6, 1-4) defense had a play of its own to take a fourth-quarter lead when Isaac Zickafoose — who added eight tackles — scooped a fumble and took 80 yards for a score and a 17-14 lead.

Plummie Gardner found Caleb Heilman for a 10-yard touchdown late in the first quarter for the Beavers’ only offensive touchdown, but the sophomore quarterback struggled most of the day completing just 11 of 29 passes for 106 yards with three interceptions.

ADA — After allowing a combined 54 points through the season’s first four weeks, Ohio Northern allowed 40-plus points for the second week in a row in falling 49-17 to nationally-ranked John Carroll in Saturday’s Ohio Athletic Conference game.

The Polar Bears, who fell to 4-2 overall and 3-2 in the OAC, have lost two straight after beginning the season 4-0.

AJ Marks broke the scoreless tie, though, with an early second-quarter touchdown run to put ONU ahead 7-0. Anthony McFadden, later in the quarter, found Anthony Amison for a 71-yard TD to keep the gam tied at 14-14.

The Polar Bears’ offense didn’t do much from that point forward being outscored 35-3 to end the game.

Michael Canganelli spearheaded the Blue Streaks’ (5-1, 4-1 OAC) offense scoring each of his three touchdowns inside the 10, racking up 109 yards on 25 carries. Quarterback Anthony Moeglin tossed for 254 yards and a pair of scores and added a team-high 126 yards rushing.

David Haseleu paced ONU’s defense with 13 tackles and 11/2 sacks. Jaymar Hines had an interception.
