The University of Findlay women’s basketball team bounced back from consecutive four-point losses in a big way Saturday afternoon.

A 14-2 start propelled the Oilers to a wire-to-wire 69-50 win over Malone in Great Midwest Athletic Conference play at Croy Gymnasium.

“Today, I thought we came out, did a nice job setting the tone,” UF coach Jim Wiedie said.

Findlay improved to 4-2 overall, 2-2 in the GMAC.

UF senior Anna Hintz dropped game highs of 18 points and 10 rebounds for her fourth double-double of the season.

Allie Thobe also cracked double figures with 10 points.

Elissa Ellerbrock (Ottawa-Glandorf) added six points, seven rebounds, eight assists and three steals.

Her entire point total, two jumpers and an offensive putback, came in UF’s opening 14-2 spurt.

As a whole, the Oilers endured a tough-luck shooting night, especially up close, and finished at 40.6 percent (28 of 69).

“I don’t know how many layups we missed today, there had to be at least 10 and they were uncontested,” Wiedie said. “Sometimes it’s a lack of focus; sometimes it’s just one of those days.”

Findlay had dropped its previous two GMAC games 74-70 at Cedarville and 70-66 against Walsh.

Both games were within two points at halftime.

The Oilers built a 37-20 halftime edge on Saturday.

Having allowed an average of 41.6 points in the second half for conference play, Wiedie “can live with” his defense only allowing 30 to Malone.

“Our starters set the tone not only in the first five minutes of the first quarter but in the third quarter we came out and set the tone again, which we didn’t do on Thursday (Walsh),” Wiedie said. “My only concern is we don’t put teams away.

“We get up 20, 25 and we don’t stomp on them and don’t bury them.”

Naomi Grandison’s 16 points fronted the Pioneers (3-6, 1-3) who shot just 30.5 percent (18 of 59), including 9 of 35 from 3-point range.

Carey grad and Malone junior Sydney Wentling came off the bench to tally three points, five rebounds and two blocks.
