The University of Findlay women’s golf team is in first place after the first round of the Cavalier Classic on Saturday at the Glenmoor Country Club in Canton.

The Oilers fired a 302 to hold a one-stroke edge on Grand Valley State.

UF’s Makenzie Torres fired a 71 to put her one stroke out of first place, behind Grand Valley State’s Maria Sole Pose.

Also for the Oilers: Samantha Hatter shot a 75, Jill Schmitmeyer added a 75 and Meredith Whipper had a 79.

Softball swept

The University of Findlay softball team was on the wrong end of a pair of walk-offs as Ursuline College prevailed 7-6 and 1-0 in a Great Midwest Athletic Conference doubleheader Saturday.

The Oilers fell to 19-19 overall, 9-9 in the GMAC.

Ursuline (12-25, 7-7 GMAC) took the first game on a walk-off walk issued by UF’s Carly Brandon to score Leah Leshnack.

Karlie Wilbur’s walk-off single plated Paige Salisbury for the only run in the second game off UF reliever Caragyn Yanek.

Amanda DelMonte went 3 for 4 with two doubles and three RBIs in the first game before tallying another double in the second for the Oilers.

Baseball splits

The University of Findlay baseball team salvaged the final game of a four-game Great Midwest Athletic Conference series with Walsh with a 7-2 win on Saturday at the Marathon Diamonds.

Hunter Weis pitched eight strong innings for the Oilers (11-19 overall, 5-13 GMAC) as he allowed two runs on seven hits with four walks and five strikeouts.

Austin Rawlins homered and singled with two RBIs and Tyler Archambeau tripled, doubled and singled to lead the Oilers at the plate.

Walsh’s Ben Bulchik held UF to two hits in Saturday’s opener in a 5-0 win by the Cavaliers.

Casey Gould and A.J. Clarey both singled for UF.

Three relays are 2nd

CANTON — Three relays posted second-place finishes for the University of Findlay track and field teams at Saturday’s Walsh Invitational.

The Oilers’ women’s 1,600 relay was second in 3:58.36. In the men’s meet, the 1,600 relay (3:15.25) and 400 relay (42.43) were both second.

Ashland’s Carrol Pauley (Riverdale) was second in the women’s hammer throw.

A couple of former area prep athletes also posted top finishes while competing unattached.

Patrick Henry grad Marcus Myers was second in the men’s hammer throw (228-6). St. Wendelin grad Keith Reiter was second in the pole vault (16-2¾).
