LEXINGTON, Ky. — The University of Findlay women’s golf team opened up a commanding lead after two rounds at the Great Midwest Athletic Conference championship Friday at the University of Kentucky’s Big Blue Golf Club.

The Oilers, who played both rounds Friday, started with a 320 before shooting the best round of the day at 312 by seven strokes.

Their score of 634 gives them a 22-stroke edge over Tiffin (319-335–654) with only today’s final round to go.

UF junior Meredith Whipper (80-74–154) has a slim lead over teammate Makenzie Torres (79-76–155) and Malone’s Christina Williams (75-80–155) in the individual standings.

Findlay’s Samantha Hatter (79-80–159) is sixth while Kristina Kniesly is tied for 11th (82-82–164).

Also for the Oilers, Jill Schmitmeyer is tied for 17th (85-83–168).

Men’s team 2nd

LEXINGTON, Ky. — University of Findlay sophomore Caleb Westfall is leading the field after the second round of the Great Midwest Athletic Conference men’s golf championship Friday at the University of Kentucky’s Big Blue Golf Club.

Both of the first two rounds were played on Friday where Westfall (144) opened on a 73 and closed with a 71 to front the Oilers. He’s one stroke ahead of Malone’s Connor Curry (73-72–145) and Trevecca Nazarene’s Blain Turner (73-72–145).

The same three schools are all vying for the team title, too.

Malone (298-295–593) has a two-shot edge on Trevecca Nazarene (294-301–595) and Findlay (296-299–595).

The Oilers are also the defending league champions.

UF junior Luke Kelly is tied for seventh (72-76–148) while freshman Tanner Grzegorcyzk is tied for 18th (78-75–153).

Also for Findlay, Dylan DeWitt (77-77–154) and Sam Griffith (74-80–154) are each tied for 23rd.

The tournament will conclude today with one 18-hole round.

Softball sweeps

Allison Brunner notched a pair of multi-hit games with a solo homer in each as the University of Findlay softball team swept Kentucky Wesleyan 7-4 and 12-9 in a Great Midwest Athletic Conference softball doubleheader Friday.

The Oilers (21-19, 11-9 GMAC) prospered in the sixth inning both times, breaking a tie with a three-run spot in the bottom half of each.

UF’s Salwa Al-Hajabed hit a sixth-inning three-run blast for the go-ahead runs in game two. She also singled and drove in a run in the first game.

Jamie Tempel had two hits in each game for the Panthers (18-23, 11-9).
