BOWLING GREEN — Findlay High School’s doubles teams are a win away from a trip to the OHSAA Division I boys state tennis tournament after winning their first two matches at Wednesday’s district tournament at Bowling Green State University’s Keefe Courts.
The top two doubles teams and singles players in Division I qualify for state.
A trip to the Lindner Family Tennis Center in Mason will be on the line for Findlay’s doubles teams of Drew Swisher and Max Hosey and Logan Tichenor and Andrew Gilgen on Saturday morning at 10 a.m. when the district semifinals take place.
Swisher and Hosey whipped Anthony Wayne’s Keegan Sehnert and Zach Conrad 6-0, 6-1 to open the tournament and knocked off Toledo St. John’s Alex Kufner and Rafa Yazji 6-1, 6-1.
They’ll take on Anthony Wayne’s Austin Swiger and Sam Reed in the semifinals for a trip to the state tournament.
Tichenor and Gilgen were pushed to three sets in their opener as they outlasted Toledo St. Francis’ Alex Kasper and Joey Miller 4-6, 6-3, 6-1. The FHS pair stopped Fremont Ross’ Lucas Cronin and Ethan Moyer 6-2, 6-0 in the quarterfinals.
Tichenor and Gilgen will play Sylvania Northview’s Anish Karnani and Dominic Ciucci in their go-to-state match.
Meanwhile in singles play, Findlay High’s three entrants all dropped opening-round matches.
Toledo St. John’s Aidan Williams defeated Findlay’s Kevin Kuhn 6-0, 6-1 and Sylvania Southview’s Nathaniel Long downed Blake Gray 6-4, 6-2. Mac Robertson fell to Oregon Clay’s Will Horvath 6-0, 6-3.
Division III district play is set for today beginning at 10 a.m. at BGSU. Ada, Ottawa-Glandorf and Upper Sandusky will all have players participating.
