GIBSONBURG 3

NEW RIEGEL 1

NEW RIEGEL — In what may have been a regional final preview, Gibsonburg used a three-run rally in the top of the fourth inning to knock off New Riegel 3-1 on Saturday in a Sandusky Bay Conference River Division matchup between the league leaders.

Ashley Mendoza led Gibsonburg with three base hits, including a two-run single in the fourth. Emily Roberts added an RBI single for the Golden Bears, who collected four of their eight hits during their fourth-inning rally.

Gibsonburg ace Jasmine McNett gave up just four hits in a complete game win that denied New Riegel (23-4, 12-2 SBC-RD) an outright league title and kept the Golden Bears in the hunt for a share of the crown. The Golden Bears are 19-7 overall and 11-2 in the league with one one make-up game left with Fremont St. Joseph (3-17, 1-10 SBC-RD).

New Riegel and Gibsonburg might end up in a regional rematch next week.

New Riegel punched its ticket to the Division IV regional with Friday’s 11-1 win over Carey. The Blue Jackets will face either Antwerp or Ayersville in Wednesday’s regional semifinal.

Gibsonburg also reached the regional, and will take on Convoy Crestview in Wednesday’s 2 p.m. semifinal. Wednesday’s winners will square off May 25 to determine who will represent Northwest Ohio in the Division IV state tournament.
