Despite what you may have seen, read and heard, there is absolutely no truth to the rumor that we keep a sharp stick on a newsroom desk to poke Dave Hanneman every now and then when it appears the old geezer may have nodded off.

Judging by the results of his Pigskin Picks, though, maybe we should.

Hanneman muddled through another mediocre week of pigskin prognostication as for the second straight week he missed five games. One saving grace was that with 19 games on the schedule, he did predict 14 games right. But sports editor Michael Burwell correctly picked 15 as the young pup continued to shine in his first foray into the Pigskin Picks.

Burwell’s 15-4 record last week upped his season total to 30-5 and expanded his lead over Hanneman (25-10) to five games.

He’ll be looking to increase that edge even more this week considering our fearless forecasters have disagreed on two games. Burwell is picking Marysville (2-0) over Findlay (0-2) and Ottawa-Glandorf (1-1) to knock off St. Marys Memorial (1-1), while Hanneman is going with the Trojans and the Roughriders.

Hanneman’s Picks

FINDLAY over Marysville — Eight of the 10 schools on Findlay’s schedule are off to 2-0 starts. The other two are 1-1. Time for the Trojans to lose their 0-fer start to the 2019 season.

LIBERTY-BENTON over Arlington — Arlington has looked good in getting off to a 2-0 start. But L-B has had the Red Devils’ number.

Cory-Rawson over NORTH BALTIMORE — These two teams just might combine for 1,000 yards total offense and 100 points. I sense a shootout.

Leipsic over VANLUE — Wildcats are off to their first 2-0 start since 2010, but Leipsic’s depth and defense will make 3-0 highly unlikely.

McComb over RIVERDALE — Names and numbers may have changed at McComb. Still the same program, though.

PANDORA-GILBOA over Van Buren — Tough call. One of the best matchups on the schedule this week.

St. Marys Memorial over OTTAWA-GLANDORF — Roughriders have a burr under the saddle and will be looking to rebound from last week’s overtime loss to Wapakoneta.

Ada over UPPER SCIOTO VALLEY — USV is 2-0. Ada is 0-2. No matter the records, though, the Bulldogs have had the upper hand in this Hardin County rivalry.

CAREY over Ashland Crestview — After two tough road losses, Blue Devils need an uplifting win to kick off a three-game home stand.

Bluffton over AYERSVILLE — Pirates looking to improve to 2-1 heading into NWC play next week.

PATRICK HENRY over Columbus Grove — Grove handed PH its last regular-season loss. I doubt the Patriots have forgotten that little tidbit.

ARCADIA over Crestline — First of Crestline’s eight games against BVC schools. Should be an interesting matchup.

HARDIN NORTHERN over Danbury — It’s a long, long haul from Danbury to Dola. I’m guessing it will be a long, sad ride home as well.

Fostoria over HOPEWELL-LOUDON — Depends on which Fostoria team shows up, the one that lost its opener 49-12 or the one that won last week 43-6.

Northwood over ELMWOOD — Comparing leagues, the NBC has bigger, stronger programs than the TAAC. Northwood, though, is the exception.

GALION over Upper Sandusky — Galion shut out Upper last season and the Tigers’ defense is a team strength once again.

Burwell’s Picks

Marysville over FINDLAY — The more I look at Findlay’s schedule, the more I realize how tough it is. A lot of 2-0 teams on there at the moment.

LIBERTY-BENTON over Arlington — Overcoming a good team is hard enough. Overcoming the mental block of a 17-game losing streak to a rival might be even harder.

Cory-Rawson over NORTH BALTIMORE — Don’t be surprised if Deontae’ Davis has another 200-yard rushing performance for the Hornets. He’s quickly become the best back in the BVC. Hornets should pick up first win of the season after two close losses.

Leipsic over VANLUE — Great start to the season for both teams. But BVC play will be quite a bit tougher for the ‘Lue.

McComb over RIVERDALE — This matchup has been a good old-fashioned beatdown since the Falcons joined the BVC. Then again, most teams playing McComb have been beaten up over the years.

PANDORA-GILBOA over Van Buren — Silas Schmenk has been shining significantly as Jared Breece’s replacement. P-G’s quarterback has got some game.

OTTAWA-GLANDORF over St. Marys Memorial — Taking a chance on this one. St. Marys Memorial is coming off an overtime loss to Wapakoneta. Roughriders haven’t lost back-to-back games since the end of the 2015 season. With the exception of last year’s lopsided loss, Titans have played the Roughriders tough the last handful of meetings.

Ada over UPPER SCIOTO VALLEY — Ada has dominated this matchup over the years, so picking the 0-2 Bulldogs to get off the schneid this week …

CAREY over Ashland Crestview — … Speaking of getting off the schneid.

Bluffton over AYERSVILLE — Pirates have lost this matchup by 13 total points the last two years. Won’t be the case this time around.

PATRICK HENRY over Columbus Grove — Game of the week involving Columbus Grove. Again. This matchup has been split 2-2 the last four years. Patrick Henry’s on a nine-game regular-season winning streak with its last loss to … Columbus Grove a year ago.

ARCADIA over Crestline — Have I mentioned anything yet about teams getting off the schneid? Seems to be a common theme this week.

HARDIN NORTHERN over Danbury — Poor Danbury … the Lakers get to travel nearly two hours from Lakeside to Dola to face an angry Polar Bears’ team that’s coming off a close loss to Riverdale. This game will (not might, WILL) be ugly.

Fostoria over HOPEWELL-LOUDON — Historic matchup. One that will hopefully pack the stands in Bascom.

Northwood over ELMWOOD — “Wood” you believe me if I told you Elmwood still plays two more teams with “wood” in its name? (In all seriousness, though, this is an interesting matchup between two 2-0 teams).

GALION over Upper Sandusky — Galion’s rampage through the Northern 10 Conference likely to continue this week. Tigers have outscored their two N10 opponents 77-13 this season.
