The OHSAA Division I and Division II boys district golf tournaments will be played at Sycamore Springs Golf Course in Arlington, instead of Red Hawk Run Golf Club in Findlay.
According to a spokesperson for Red Hawk, the course does not have the personnel to run the tournaments this year. Multiple people in key positions at the course have stepped down in the last two weeks.
Findlay businessman Nick Reinhart, owner of Red Hawk, said Wednesday that “there’s still so many options that we’re evaluating” in regard to the future of the course. He also said he will know more for certain in two weeks.
The Division II boys district tournament will take place on Oct. 3, with the Division I tournament on Oct. 10.
Sycamore Springs will host five OHSAA tournaments during the next two weeks, beginning with today’s Division III boys sectional tournament.
The course, an 18-hole, par-72 public course that was opened in 1958, will also host the Division II girls district championship on Monday and the Division I girls sectional tournament on Wednesday.
The Northwest District Athletic Board reached out to Joe Mayberry, general manager of Sycamore Springs, when Red Hawk declared it could no longer host the tournaments.
Mayberry jumped on the opportunity to host the two championships on the course just off U.S. 68 on the north side of Arlington.
“We’ve got a pretty good relationship with the Northwest District Athletic Board, and when we found out and the district found out that (Red Hawk) did not want to host, I volunteered,” Mayberry said. “Fortunately, we’ve got a pretty good track record on hosting these tournaments and they just said ‘they’re yours if you want them.’
“We are very blessed and fortunate to be down here just south of Findlay and run pretty good tournaments throughout the course of the year, and for the NWDAB just to grant us two more major tournaments without really batting an eye is a nice little feather in the cap.”
Sycamore Springs is the home to multiple area high school golf teams, including Arlington, Liberty-Benton and Riverdale. Findlay High has also hosted tournaments at the course.
