Findlay’s Ben Patey shared coach of the year honors and the Trojans’ Michael Armstrong received one of four individual awards in the Northwest Hockey Conference Red Division all-league selections for the 2019-20 season.
In his first season as FHS head coach, Patey guided a rather young team (18 freshmen and sophomores on a 27-man varsity squad) to a 12-17-4 overall record. The Trojans were 6-6 and finished fourth (12 points) in the revamped Red Division, which expanded from five to seven schools last year.
Armstrong was one of two players named the Dunn Sportsperson of the Year in the Red Division. A sophomore forward, Armstrong scored nine goals and had 17 assists.
Harrison Hall, a senior forward for the Trojans, earned second-team all-league honors in voting by NHC Red Division coaches. Hall scored 15 goals and led Findlay with 27 assists and 42 total points.
Ethan Franks, a junior defenseman who scored a team-high 17 goals, and sophomore goalie Cody Mlsna, who had 433 saves and a 9-10-3 record in 22 games, received honorable mention all-league recognition.
Patey shared Red Division Coach of the Year honors with Chris Varga, who guided Toledo St. Francis to the Northwest District tournament championship and a spot in the OHSAA final four before play was suspended.
Sylvania Northview’s David Crandall, the top player on a Wildcats’ team that shared the Red Division regular-season title with Toledo St. John’s, was named the league’s player of the year.
