Spring sports have been scrapped this year. But area readers who are used to getting a daily dose of the exploits of local and area athletes and teams can continue to do so as The Courier Sports Department presents some “On This Date” highlights from the last five years.
2019 — Singles players Max Hosey and Carson Dale and Findlay’s No. 1 doubles team of Logan Tichenor and Andrew Gilgen posted decisive wins as the Trojans beat Toledo St. John’s 3-1 in the Ohio Tennis Coaches Association team tournament and earned the program’s first trip to the state semifinals.
2016 — Bluffton’s Trevor Bassitt broke a stadium record with a personal-best 14.72 in the 110 high hurdles and added a PR of 39.44 in the 300 hurdles, Cory-Rawson’s Mason Warnimont set personal bests in winning the 100 (10.94) and 200 (22.06) and Arcadia’s Shae Watkins set a stadium record in the discus (176-1) at the Division III district track and field meet at the Cooper Tire Complex at Findlay High School.
2016 — Elmwood’s Phillip Buckingham limited Coldwater to two runs on five hits and the Royals survived two rain delays and six errors to beat the No. 2-ranked Cavaliers 5-2 and claim the school’s first Division III district baseball title since 2010.
2016 — University of Findlay golfer Kasey Petty finished a close second to Grand Valley State’s Gabrielle Shipley in a battle for medalist honors at the NCAA Division II golf championships.
2016 — Kalida’s Austin Swift allowed three hits, one unearned run and struck out 18 batters in seven innings of relief in a 3-2 win over Leipsic in a Division IV district championship game at Ottawa’s Memorial Park. Swift also put down a sacrifice bunt that led to a game-tying run in the bottom of the ninth inning, then lashed a game-winning RBI single in the 10th as the Wildcats earned their first trip to the Sweet Sixteen since they made four consecutive regional appearances from 2004-07.
2015 — University of Findlay senior Justin Welch unleashed a throw of 221 feet, 5 inches to win his second straight — and fourth overall — NCAA Division II championship in the hammer throw.
2015 — Nick Kiffmeyer delivered a game-tying two-run double in the bottom of the sixth inning, pinch hitter Dakota Feay followed with an RBI single to put Findlay in front and Connor Curlis retired the final eight Toledo Central Catholic batters in order as the Trojans rallied from a 3-0 deficit to beat the Irish 4-3 in a Division I district semifinal contest at Toledo’s Mercy Field.
2015 — Brad Croy pitched a shutout and lined a two-run double in leading Ottawa-Glandorf to its school-record 20th victory of the season, a 4-0 win over St. Henry in a Division III district baseball semifinal at Ohio Northern University’s Wander Field.
2015 — Columbus Grove’s boys 3,200-meter relay team of Alex Giesige, Colton Grothaus, Boone Brubaker and Bryce Sharrits posted a winning time of 8:04.60, shattering the existing meet record by almost 10 seconds during the Division III district track and field meet.
2015 — Arcadia’s Shae Watkins set a meet record with a winning discus throw of 178-2 to highlight first-day performances at the Gibsonburg Division III district track and field meet. Watkins won the event by more than 30 feet.
