Spring sports have been scrapped this year. But area readers who are used to getting a daily dose of the exploits of local and area athletes and teams can continue to do so as The Courier Sports Department presents some “On This Date” highlights from the last five years.
2019 — McComb erased a 2-1 deficit by sending 12 batters to the plate during an eight-run fourth-inning rally and rolled to a 13-3 win over Arcadia in a Division IV district baseball semifinal at Patrick Henry High School.
2019 — Leipsic scored three runs in the top of the ninth inning and held on to beat Patrick Henry 6-3 in a Division IV district baseball semifinal. Dylan Schroeder was 3 for 3 with two singles and a double, walked once, was hit by a pitch and scored twice for Leipsic.
2019 — Patrick Henry’s Trista Fintel heaved the shot put 41-111/4 and Arlington’s Hannah Willow cleared 5-4 as both won championships during the first day of the Division III regional track and field meet.
2019 — Findlay High’s Lexie Layne punched her ticket to the state track meet by high jumping 5-3 in the Division I regional meet in Amherst.
2019 — Josh Recker pitched 62/3 scoreless innings to lift Kalida to a 3-0 Division IV district semifinal baseball win over Arlington in a game moved from Ottawa’s Memorial Park to Defiance because of wet conditions.
2019 — Chase Kuhlman struck out five and tossed a complete-game one-hitter and Miller City run-ruled Delphos St. John’s 10-0 in a Division IV district semifinal at Ottawa.
2019 — Hailey Niederkohr’s grand slam in the bottom of the fifth inning gave Carey a 9-5 win over Bucyrus as the Blue Devils (21-6) tied the school record with their 21st softball win of the season.
2015 — Laura Myers’ two-run home run lifted Arlington to a 4-1 first-inning lead on New Riegel. But the Blue Jackets chipped away inning by inning and rallied to beat the Red Devils 7-6 and claim a third straight Division IV district softball championship.
2015 — Nichole Miller pitched a four-hitter, Kila Fultz and Kailey Leal delivered clutch RBI singles and Van Buren earned the school’s first district softball championship with a 3-1 win over Ayersville in Division IV tournament play at Elida.
2015 — Clay Grubb pitched a two-hit shutout, struck out 10 Arlington batters and faced just four hitters over the minimum and McComb scratched out three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning in beating the Red Devils 3-0 to reach the Division IV district championship game for the third straight year.
2015 — Findlay High School senior Emily Stahl won district titles in the 1,600- and 3,200-meter runs, Isaiah Gaines won the 800 and Mikaela Ramsey qualified for regionals in four events to lead the Trojans track and field teams at the Division I district meet at Tiffin’s Frost-Kalnow Stadium.
2015 — Liberty-Benton’s Michaela Butler was a three-time winner, setting a district meet record of 11.90 in the 100-meter dash in the process, as the Eagles won a girls track championship at the Division II district at Oak Harbor.
