Sarah Idella Oswald’s final Labor Day ended with a parade of beloved family members. As daughter Bonnie stood vigil, Sarah took leave of this life early Tuesday morning, September 4, 2018 at the age of 90.
Sarah Idella was born January 30, 1928 in Tiffin, Ohio into the farm family of the late Mr. Lester and Mrs. Esta (King) Humm. A graduate of Van Buren School, Sarah fell in love with and married Arthur Oswald, a Navy Veteran of WWII on August 23, 1946.
Sarah continued to live in her Eastowne Estates mobile home after the passing of her husband in 2009 with the love and a little support from nearby family and neighbors she could call upon.
A fall led to her hospitalization in June and a precipitous decline in her health. Her last two months were spent at Fox Run Manor valiantly fighting against care that may have prolonged her life but could not restore the independence and privacy she cherished.
Sarah is survived by her six children; Jerry Oswald, Ron (Rita) Oswald, Mike (Linda) Oswald, Nancy (Charles) Frederick, all of Findlay, Sarah Jane (Jerry) Boss of Holland, Michigan, and Bonnie Gochenauer of Pemberville, Ohio. She is also survived by fifteen grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great-grandchildren; a brother, John Humm; and sisters, Ina Mae Steiner and D. Maxine Cramer, all of Findlay. Preceding Mrs. Oswald in death are brothers, Leland, Marion, and Russell (Rosie) Humm; and sisters, Evelyn Humm, Mildred Snyder, and Zoellen Schindler.
In addition to being a homemaker for a family of eight, Sarah had worked in manufacturing at Fibers, as a waitress at Gallagher’s and Britt’s and as an attendant at the YMCA until 1989.
In early retirement years, Sarah and Art enjoyed doing seasonal work at East Harbor State Park during the summer, then packing up the trailer to spend winters in Lake Placid, Florida. Sarah and Art were members of VFW, Outboard Boating Club, Wagon Wheeler’s Square Dance Club, and NCHA. Sarah’s recent and less physically demanding passion was Ohio State Football.
Friends and family may visit on Friday, September 7, 2018 from 2-4 p.m. at HUFFORD FAMILY FUNERAL HOME, 1500 Manor Hill Rd, Findlay (419-422-1500) with a memorial service to begin at 4 p.m. A graveside service for Sarah will be held at a later date.
Memorial contributions in Sarah’s name may be made to Salem Cass United Methodist Church, 4699 CR 236, Findlay, Ohio 45840, YMCA, 300 E. Lincoln St., Findlay, Ohio 45840, or Bridge Home Health & Hospice, 15100 Birchaven Lane, Findlay, Ohio 45840.
