For a safe and fun Independence Day

As the chiefs of the Findlay Fire Department and the Findlay Police Department, our jobs are to ensure that our community stays a safe place for residents and visitors. As the Independence Day holiday approaches, we wanted to share a few reminders to ensure everyone has a safe and enjoyable holiday. Findlay residents are reminded that Ohio law permits the use of consumer fireworks with certain restrictions. These fireworks may only be discharged from 4-11 p.m. on July 3, 4 and 5, as well as on Friday, Saturday and Sunday immediately before and after the actual holiday. Fireworks may only be discharged on property owned by the user or on property where the owner has granted express permission. Fireworks may not be discharged on public property or private school property. Ohio law also establishes minimum separation distances for fireworks. Aerial fireworks, even small bottle rockets, must be discharged at least 150 feet from spectators and the nearest point of any structure or building. Ground-based fireworks, including fountains and firecrackers, must be discharged at least 50 feet from spectators. Individuals under the age of 18 are not permitted to handle or discharge fireworks and must remain at least 150 feet from the discharge point of aerial fireworks. Residents should follow basic fireworks safety practices. Never allow young children to handle fireworks, always wear protective eyewear when using fireworks or when standing nearby, and never hold lit fireworks in your hand. Fireworks should be used only in areas away from people, homes, vehicles, and other combustible materials. Never attempt to relight fireworks that fail to ignite and keep a water source or fire extinguisher nearby. Always soak spent and unused fireworks in water prior to disposal. Ohio law makes it a first-degree misdemeanor to negligently use fireworks while under the influence of alcohol or a controlled substance. Residents should also be mindful that fireworks can affect others in the community. Loud noises may cause distress for pets and may have physical or emotional effects on veterans, individuals with post-traumatic stress, young children, older adults, and those with sensory sensitivities. Pet owners are encouraged to keep animals secured indoors during periods of fireworks activity. Following Ohio's fireworks laws and established safety practices can help reduce the risk of injury, fire, and property damage during Independence Day celebrations.
