With local oversight, data centers are a win for area As discussions around data centers continue across Northwest Ohio, it is natural for neighbors to have questions about what these facilities mean for Findlay and Hancock County. However, separating common misconceptions from the realities of modern digital infrastructure shows that responsible development is a win for our community. First, concerns about resource consumption often overlook modern industry standards. Contemporary facilities increasingly rely on closed-loop cooling technologies that consume minimal water (about 17 billion gallons per year) compared with other industries. Consider that lawn watering (3,300 billion gallons/year), California almond growing (1,100 billion gallons/year) and even golf courses (about 540 billion gallons/year) use substantially more water than all data centers combined. Additionally, research on energy usage has consistently shown that because data centers pay massive electric bills to support around-the-clock operations, they help spread the utility's fixed grid-maintenance costs over far more power volume, which puts downward pressure on residential electric rates. Second, according to the Institute of Transportation Engineers (ITE), data centers generate only 0.1 to 0.2 vehicle trips per 1,000 square feet during peak hours — a fraction of the traffic from logistics hubs or retail centers. Environmentally, their direct emissions are negligible compared to heavy manufacturing, agriculture, or aviation. Most importantly, these facilities deliver substantial property tax revenue (often exceeding $1–2 million per building annually) directly to local schools and first responders without straining municipal services. Given the local concern over new apartments, a data center is an excellent choice to help alleviate pressure on municipal services and the tax base. Finally, proactive local oversight ensures our community remains firmly in the driver's seat. We do not have to choose between preserving our region's character and embracing 21st-century economic growth. With sensible planning, data centers can provide a clean, sustainable boost to Findlay for decades. Matthew BealFindlay
