Reading is important for adults, too

At the Findlay-Hancock County Public Library, we often talk about the importance of reading to kids. We encourage books from birth with the Dolly Parton's Imagination Library and 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten programs. For eight weeks each year, SummerREAD takes over as we work to prevent summer learning loss. We offer engaging programs and fun activities to get kids in the library year-round. Children with frequent exposure to books have greater success in school at all levels, and we are committed to building that access to books. All of that effort is undoubtedly important. But what about the adults? I have recently read several articles suggesting we are heading for a post-literate society, citing various reports of a decrease in reading among adults. One argued that short-form videos and social media are killing our attention spans, making it difficult to maintain focus while reading. Another pointed out the distinct difference in complexity between current and historic popular titles. While I am a staunch proponent that everyone should be free to read what they want, I can't deny that many of the modern books I love most do offer a less robust vocabulary than, say, Charles Dickens. Of course you could also argue that Dickens was easier to read than "Beowulf" in Anglo-Saxon. Spending my days surrounded by books and book lovers, I find it hard to believe that few adults are reading just for fun. With an average of 18 books checked out per cardholder last year, we know FHCPL patrons are doing their part to support reading at all ages. If you haven't enjoyed a book just for fun lately, let this be your warning call. Studies show that readers have higher executive functioning skills. They are better able to reason effectively, to analyze patterns and to comprehend the difficult texts they read. Just like exercise, think of your ability to read as a muscle. You can build that ability through regular practice. Early literacy is important, but reading is no less important for adults, and the children of our community are watching. Let them see you spend time regularly reading as an undeniable demonstration of the value.
