Protecting young ears: why hearing safety matters for children

Children experience the world through the sounds around them, from a parent's voice and classroom lessons to music, sports, and play. Healthy hearing is important for speech and language development, learning, and social interaction. While hearing loss is often associated with aging, it can affect children as well, and in many cases, it is preventable. One of the most common causes of preventable hearing loss is prolonged exposure to loud noise. Repeated exposure to loud sounds can overwork and damage the delicate sensory "hair cells" inside the inner ear. When sound waves enter the ear, they are converted into fluid waves that push against these hair cells, and loud sounds can produce intense pressure. Unlike other cells in the body, these hair cells do not regenerate once they are damaged. Because of this, simple activities like listening to music through headphones at high volumes, attending concerts or sporting events, or participating in activities such as hunting or motorsports, can cause permanent damage. It can be difficult to recognize the signs of hearing loss because it often develops gradually over time. Children may not realize their hearing has changed, making it important for adults to notice subtle clues. Signs of hearing loss can include frequently asking others to repeat themselves, turning the television or other devices up louder than usual, difficulty following conversations in noisy environments, trouble paying attention at school, delayed speech or language development in younger children, or complaining of ringing or buzzing in the ears after exposure to loud sounds. If you notice any of these symptoms, it's important to discuss them with your child's healthcare provider, who may recommend a hearing evaluation. The good news is that simple steps can go a long way in protecting your child's hearing. Encourage children and teens to follow the "60/60 rule" when using personal listening devices. This means listening at no more than 60% of the maximum volume for no more than 60 minutes at a time, then taking a break. Noise-canceling headphones can also help reduce the temptation to increase the volume in noisy environments. For louder activities, such as fireworks displays, concerts, or races, properly fitted earplugs or earmuffs can significantly reduce the risk of hearing damage. Parents should also model good hearing habits by wearing hearing protection themselves. Routine hearing screenings are another important part of maintaining your child's health. These screenings can identify concerns early, allowing for prompt intervention that can support communication, learning, and overall development. By taking a proactive approach to hearing safety, families can help ensure children continue to enjoy the sounds that matter most throughout their lives.
