Want to learn more about harmful algal blooms in Lake Erie?BGSU Firelands is offering a workshop on harmful algal blooms in Lake Erie, and it's open to everyone, not just BGSU students."Algal Blooms in Lake Erie: Impact on Our Community" will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Thursday, April 23, at Cedar Point Center, One University Drive on the BGSU Firelands campus in Huron. Light refreshments will be served at 10:30 a.m. The panel discussion will be led by George Bullerjahn, professor of biology at Bowling Green State University. Bullerjahn has a Ph.D. from the University of Virginia. One of his main research interests is the cyanobacteria blamed for harmful algal blooms.Bullerjahn will be joined on his panel by Douglas Keller, Sandusky water services superintendent; Scudder Mackey, chief of the Ohio Office of Coastal Management in Sandusky, and David Klarer of the Old Woman Creek National Estuarine Research Reserve.The Sandusy Register will broadcast the panel discussion live for anyone who can't be physically present. In addition, Bullerjahn and another guest, Ram S. Veerapaneni, assistant professor of biology, BGSU Firelands, will appear at 3:30 p.m. Thursday on "Between the Lines Live," the public affairs talk show broadcast from SanduskyRegister.com.Veerapaneni was part of a team of scientists that discovered that Lake Vostok in Antarctica has thousands of different kinds of bacteria, despite the fact that the lake is under a glacier and is dark as well as cold.
