Teens injured in wrong-way fatal crash released from hospital

DANBURY TWP. — Questions linger in the case of a wrong-way fatal crash on the Thomas Edison Memorial Bridge late Friday evening.But law enforcement said two teens injured in the crash have since been released from the hospital.The crash occurred Friday at about 11:17 p.m. on the Edison Bridge in Danbury Township, according to information from the Ohio State Highway Patrol.A 2014 Ford Escape driven by Burlyn Fick, 82, of Port Clinton, drove the wrong way — traveling west in the eastbound lanes of the bridge — and hit a 2014 Jeep Wrangler head-on. Fick suffered serious injuries and was later pronounced dead at Magruder Hospital in Port Clinton.Two people in the Jeep, 18-year-old Maria Rodriguez of Norwalk and a 17-year-old Oak Harbor boy, were also hurt and taken to Firelands Regional Medical Center in Sandusky.Sgt. John McGlashan, of the Patrol's Sandusky post, said both Rodriguez and the 17-year-old have had their injuries treated and they've since been discharged from the hospital.McGlashan said it's still unknown how and why Fick drove into the oncoming lane. "We're still trying to figure out where he was coming from and where he was going," he said.Law enforcement will interview members of Fick's family to hopefully answer that question, McGlashan said.
