Rams bring back a load of experience to compete in N10 By Matt Nye Sports Editor UPPER SANDUSKY - It hasn't been a smooth transition in the Russell Hall regime to this point. A lot of that might not be his fault, with a plethora of injuries a couple years ago and last year playing a really young team in a top-heavy Northern 10 Athletic Conference. However, since he had to play so many young players last year, especially on the offensive line, the Rams have a bunch of experience on this year's team. "I think people have a better grasp at what they need to do this year than last," Hall said. "We changed our offense last year and it was a big change, it really was and it was a lot. We played a lot of young guys, unfortunately we just didn't have that consistency and it wasn't just one guy. It seemed to be a lot of 10 guys executing and just one guy not quite able to get it done. It's not lack of effort or anything, it was what it was, with inexperience and things like that." The Rams have a lot of experience at the line positions, but where they are lacking that varsity-level experience is at some key skill positions, including quarterback. Mason Vent was the signal caller last season. He was a dynamic athlete who was under pressure quite often, but did produce some good numbers. He accounted for 26 total touchdowns and about 2,400 yards of offense through the air and on the ground. He did toss a league-leading 18 interceptions. They will also be without playmaking wide receiver Diago Cazares. He led the league in receiving yards with 881 on 40 receptions, with eight touchdowns. "We'll certainly miss those skill guys, and you never replace a senior, that's for sure, but most of our skilled guys were seniors last year, but these guys coming up are ready to go and excited for their opportunity," Hall said. "Good thing about playing younger guys at those line spots, they got that experience. In all situations there is always a positive and we got a lot of guys back that played on Friday nights, some probably played before they probably should have, but they will grow and get better because of it. "All summer there were three guys competing for the QB spot. It really depended on the day, it really did. All are very smart and high football IQ guys. They all have their unique skill sets and things like that and we are in a fortunate spot with the guys at the QB position. It wasn't 'Oh well, who are we going to put there?' It was more like 'Wow, so-and-so looked really good there today.' It's gone back and forth, actually have some depth there." Senior Jordan Wright, sophomore Keegan Iles and freshman Kaden Holman are battling for the spot. Hall said Wright has the varsity experience playing some of the position his sophomore year, while Iles is a physically-imposing QB standing at 6-foot-3 and can run and throw. Holman came in studying the routes and playbook and has picked things up really quick. It certainly won't be an easy decision, but one Hall has to make soon before the Rams take on Mohawk in Week 1. Offensively, the Rams have Gage Frey, Aiden Gallant and Carson Barrows rotating in at running back. Up front with all of the experience are Darius Stowers and Jimmy Kotterman both at tackle spots, Logan Risner and Creighton Morton at guards and Collin Bils at center. Hall said Blake Herbert will also see some time at tackle. Zach Sheaffer, Evan Hill, Tommy Brown and Karson Stombaugh will see time at the wide receiver spot. There is depth there, but not a lot of experience, Hall said. "It definitely starts up front and we are going to be relying on that offensive line. They were the young guys last year, but now they are the guys coming back with experience, so if they play well than our offense will run pretty good," he said. "Keep telling them and letting them know that, it's a lot of pressure on, it really is, but if they step up we'll do pretty well." At the D-line spots, the Rams will have Braxton Johnston, Stowers, Borrows, Bils, Carson VanHorn and Aaron Flowers rotating. At inside linebacker, Gallant returns with Herbert, with Tobi Marquart and Borrows rotating in. Tim Vukovich returns at outside backer (2 fumble recoveries in 2019). Frey, Stombaugh and Iles will also be in the mix there. The defensive backs include Wright, Brown, Alec Broderdorp and Hill. "Understanding on how your part fits is a key on that side of the ball," Hall said. "That's something last year we kind of got away from. We didn't show the whole puzzle, we focused so much on one piece and as a result some people tried to do more than they needed to do. We need them to work more as a whole instead of 11 individuals." With the weird format to the season, the N10 is jumping right into six league games this season and then everyone will make the playoffs. "I expect the N10 to be absolutely tough. Wynford is always great, Seneca East is on a roll, Mohawk has almost their whole team back and is a dangerous team," Hall said. "Carey made it to a regional final last year, they'll be tough. It will be a great hard-nosed league and you have to bring it every week or you'll be in trouble. "Upper Sandusky has actually never won a playoff game, so this is a great opportunity and that's what I've told the kids.
