Liberty tops elite field at Trojan Invite

The results lived up to the reputation of the programs involved when several of the elite prep golf teams in the state gathered at the Findlay Country Club on Saturday for the 2020 Findlay Trojans Invitational. Dublin Jerome, Ohio's reigning Division I state champion, was on hand. But the Celtics were only fourth despite an excellent team score of 305. Olentangy Liberty, fifth at state a year ago, carded a 298 team total to edge Columbus St. Charles, state champ in 2009 and 2010 and runner-up twice since, by two strokes. Cincinnati Moeller, fourth at the state meet a year ago, was third at 304. Upper Arlington, which owns more state golf titles (17) than any high school in the state, was fifth (308), followed by Toledo St. John's (309), Ashland (312), New Albany (324), Dublin Coffman (329), Findlay (343) and Columbus Bishop Watterson (350), Van Buren and Olentangy tied for 12th at 360. Ashland's Tyler Sabo was the tournament medalist, shooting a 3-under-par 69 on the FCC layout. Nick Feighner led Findlay with an 8-over 80. Danny Moninger fired an 87 and Justin Hartman and Grant Lane both had 88s. Van Buren's Carson Foltz led area golfers in the medalist standings with a 78. Weston Heitkamp carded an 88, Peter Harrington a 94 and Kaleb Bishop a 100 for the Knights. Justy VonLehmden and Henry Rill turned in two of the top scores for Toledo St. John's, VonLehmden with a 75 that was the 11th best round of the day, and Rill with an 81. Reuille leads Trojans LIBERTY CENTER – Findlay's Luke Reuille was second and the Trojans placed four runners in the top ten of the Stars Division race at the Freedom Invite Cross Country meet on Saturday. Reuille, a senior, toured the 5k course in a time of 17:11.64. Maumee's Eric Board won the Stars Division race in 16:49.36. Findlay's Adam Hellman finished fifth (17:45.57), Ty Cordonnier was a close sixth (17:48.41) and Benjamin Smith was tenth (17:53.56). Andrew Behrendt was 16th (18:20.18). In the team scoring among the schools in the Stars Division, Findlay and Maumee tied for first (39) with Perrysburg third (48). In the girls division of the Stars bracket, Perrysburg runners claimed 11 of the top 12 spots to finish with 16 points. Findlay had 47 and Maumee 79. Colette Seager busted up Perrysburg's dominance at the top of the standings, finishing fifth with a time of 20:51.39. Alli Ernst (21:32.44) and Karlee Dittman (21:34.24) were 13th and 14th, Larkin Warner was 19th (21:56.01) and Lindsey Cassata placed 22nd (22:34.21). Elmwood runners competed in the Stripes Division. In the boys meet, Jakob Zibbel was 15th (19:56.79) and Brady Ziegler was 20th (20:34.03) for the Royals. In the girls race, Anna Allison was 25th (25:07.78) and Abbie Allison 28th (26:01.87). Volleyball teams falls PERRYSBURG 3 FINDLAY &emsp;&emsp;0 PERRSYBURG — Perrysburg got off to a strong start in sweeping Findlay High's volleyball team 25-9, 25-20, 25-17 in nonleague play on Saturday. Sammy Vance led Findlay (2-5) with seven kills. Kylie Britton had a team-high 10 assists and Shannon Kotz had eight digs. In some marathon matches, Findlay won both the JV (25-21, 26-24) and freshman (29-31, 25-16, 26-24) games.
