Trump vows to seat conservative judge

President Donald Trump on Monday promised to nominate a conservative to the Supreme Court by Saturday and to keep suburbs safe if re-elected during a campaign event in Toledo. His push to soon replace Ruth Bader Ginsburg, who died Friday at 87, has sparked a firestorm among liberals who fear the Republicans' choice would overturn abortion rights, as well as the Affordable Care Act and its guarantee of coverage for people with pre-existing conditions. Arguments in a case that could determine the future of the health care law are set for a week after election day, with Trump supporting a Republican effort to overturn it. Trump sought to put Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden on the defensive. "If Joe Biden and the Democrats take power, they will pack the Supreme Court with far-left radicals who will unilaterally transform American society far beyond recognition," Trump said. "They will mutilate the law, disfigure the Constitution and impose a socialist vision." Trump, who has given himself an "A" grade for his handling of the COVID-19 pandemic, declared Monday: "We have one of the lowest fatality rates of any major country in the world." But with nearly 200,000 people dead from the coronavirus in the United States, the U.S. has 20% of the world's COVID-19 deaths, despite having only 5% of the world's population. Trump said the nation is rounding the corner in beating the virus. "We have three vaccines right now that are right there. They're right at the starting gate," he said. "They're going to be fantastic. And with Biden, if you had that regime, you'd be three years away because they would have never gotten out of the (Food and Drug Administration)." Americans are sharply divided over whether they would get a vaccine because of concerns about the safety and effectiveness of a possible vaccine and a hasty approval process, a Pew Research Center survey reported. Also on Monday, Trump called Biden a "shameless phony" who sold out Ohioans in supporting the North American Free Trade Agreement and the Paris Agreement to combat climate change. He boasted about getting the U.S. out of the Paris Agreement. "That was designed to hurt our country," Trump said. "You would have lost trillions of dollars, closed your factories all over the place. In the meantime, China didn't kick in for another 10 years. The whole thing was a rigged deal." He said suburban residents need to "wake up" and "get smart" because if Biden gets elected, he will destroy suburbia. Suburban residents "want security. They don't want projects being right next to their house," Trump said. "That's OK." "You look at Portland, you look at Chicago, you look at New York, you look at Baltimore and Oakland. These are Democrat-run cities that are horrible on crime," he said. "There's no law and order."
