Mayor: 98% of county households counted in census

Findlay Mayor Christina Muryn announced Thursday that 98% of Hancock County's households have been accounted for in the 2020 census, with 74% of the households self-reporting. In the 2010 census count, the county's final self-response rate was 71%. Based on the latest census estimates, for the 2014-18 period, a total of 73,746 Hancock County residents live in 31,887 households, and 1,944 people live in group quarters. The census bureau now lists the county's total population at 75,690. The 2020 census self-response rate for households is 66% for the United States and 70% reported for the State of Ohio. Muryn thanked county leaders, members of Findlay City Council, and Hancock County's "Complete Count Committee" for their work to encourage participation in the census. Monday is the final day to participate in the census. Census data determines the distribution of about $675 billion in federal funds that support programs for housing, education, transportation, employment, health care and public policy. The data is also used to redraw the boundaries of congressional and state legislative districts and determine the number of congressional seats each state has in the U.S. House of Representatives. Complete redistricting information will be delivered to each of the 50 states in March 2021. The U.S. Constitution requires that a complete count of citizens be made every 10 years. The first census was taken in 1790.
