Chopin Hall resumes free clothes 'shopping'

Chopin Hall, which offers free clothing for low-income families, is trying to get the word out that it's once again in operation for any families who might need back-to-school clothes for their kids. Executive Director Ron Rooker said since the nonprofit organization's inception in 1984, clothing, as well as food, has been a part of its mission. Around 70% of its space at The Family Center is dedicated to clothing, which has always been a big part of Chopin's operation, he said. He said the organization also handles other household items, but not furniture or electronics. Before the COVID-19 pandemic, clients could come in twice a month to "shop" for clothing, also getting food one of those two times. Everything is offered for free. Families must meet income requirements and be Hancock County residents. But when the pandemic hit, Chopin prohibited people from coming into its facility, instead distributing food on a drive-thru basis. Rooker said in mid-August, to help families during the back-to-school season, they began letting families with children come in. Appointments to get clothing must be scheduled, and families must follow rules including wearing masks and staying 6 feet apart from others. He said since reopening clothing shopping in August, the organization has had open slots for appointments every week, so employees are trying to get the word out to families that the opportunity has resumed. Chopin Hall purchases children's socks and underwear, but all other clothing is used. The nonprofit is accepting donations of clothing for school-aged children and infants during its drive-thru distributions, which are held from 1-3 p.m. Wednesdays and some Fridays. "Please call or visit our website to confirm days we are accepting clothing," a press release states. "Unfortunately, we do not have the capacity to accept any household goods, at this time." Eligible families may shop for clothing from 1-3 p.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Each family will have 20 minutes to shop. To reserve a time, call 419-422-6401.
