Claire M. Davis

Claire M. Davis died Dec. 2, 2020, at Birchaven Village of natural causes. She was born Helena Claire Monce on January 4, 1919, in Cincinnati. Her parents were Howard J. Monce and Helen Corinne Sparkes Monce. She grew up there with one brother and was graduated in 1937 from Withrow High School. She met her late husband, Joseph Wilkins Davis Jr., through Wesley Foundation when they both attended the University of Cincinnati. Claire worked in libraries and later at Crosley Radio during early WWII. She and Joe were married 68 years until his death in 2009. They lived-in Jeffersonville, IN, during war time, then moved to Findlay in 1948 where Joe worked for Cooper Tire and Rubber Company. Most of her family from 5 states and many local friends celebrated Claire's 100th birthday in Findlay with her in November 2018. Claire lived at Birchaven Village, having moved with Joe to Birchaven Heights in 2008. Her family is very proud of the many volunteer projects she took on during all of her adult life, including starting a well-baby clinic and a library on wagon wheels in Jeffersonville, IN, Girl Scouts, YMCA, Civic Music, Howard UM Church, League of Women Voters, Hancock Park District, Alzheimer's Day Care, Meals on Wheels, and Broadmead Meeting of The Society of Friends. Claire felt very honored to be featured in the Humans of Findlay publication. She enjoyed the University of Findlay's Mazza Children's Literature museum and proudly showed it off to visitors. Claire loved Findlay and raising their family here: Judi C. Umaki (Gordon), Lake Oswego, OR; the late Robert M. Davis (Donna, California); Sarah D. Hugus (Scott), Boca Raton, FL, "adopted" daughter Ebby Luvaga and son Faisal of Ames, IA. Also surviving are 3 granddaughters, Katie (Jeff), Joleigh (James), Anne (Andres), 2 adored great-grandchildren Josh and Megan; brother-in-law, Robert E. Davis, Colorado; 3 nieces, 2 nephews, and one cousin in Washington state. Claire's family thanks the many dedicated nurses, staff and volunteers at Birchaven for their care and kindness over the years. We also dearly appreciate local friends, including Sue Sandusky, Diane and Greg Mott and family, Connie Sprague, Rikki Youngpeter, and Judy W. Davis, who all filled in as loving visitors during Claire's declining years. The family is holding no local visitation or memorial service.
