The Greatest Generation The Greatest Generation consists of those individuals who were born in the early 1900s. They saw our country though World War II, and made tremendous sacrifices which helped our country win victory over our enemies. Many men gave their lives, and more were injured. Women stepped up and filled in for the men who left to fight the war. Those who stayed home did their part to help the war effort. Rationing became a fact of life. For over five years the following items were rationed: butter, sugar, meat, lard/shorting, coffee, tires, gasoline, coal, firewood, silk, and nylon. You could not buy a new car between January 1942 and October 1945. Today, our country needs us to step up. We need to wear face masks, keep socially distant, and not gather in large groups. We are asked not to travel, and to celebrate the holidays with just those living in our homes. Let's prove we can also make sacrifices. Do it for family, friends, neighbors, strangers and your country. Show the approximately 75,000 surviving Greatest Generationers that we, too, can sacrifice. Karen Noyes Findlay Root causes Josh Hanson's article on Nov. 30 raised an important question that prompted me to think about root causes. Why are we where we are? For many years, it seems to have been wisdom in our culture to not bring up the subjects of religion or politics. Where did this cultural foolishness under the guise of wisdom lead us? Right where we are. We weren't taught how to converse respectfully with people we disagreed with. (I was taught I might win an argument but lose a friend. I can't win someone I insult.) This is one of many great failures of our public school system on to higher education that commonly despises the Bible and faith as a fairytale and anti-science. A good Christian education teaches us especially, the Proverbs of Solomon. Example: "A soft answer turns away wrath." The esteemed President Lincoln said: "It is impossible to rightly govern a people without the Bible." Instead of independent and personal learning via history, both Church and political, many are brainwashed by college professors. They promote philosophies that neither our nation's founders believed, nor did Jesus Christ teach. These flawed professors only read the Bible to look for excuses to discredit it. They search for flaws in our nation's founders demanding perfection they lack to a far greater degree. Yes, they had slaves however, but ours is the first country to embrace abolition as a nation. Parents abdicating their primary responsibility are now pushed away by "It takes a village" modern philosophy. Conservative speeches on the U. S. Constitution is anathema on Ivy league campuses like Yale and Harvard. These schools were first established to train teachers and ministers. Harvard's mission statement included training students: "to know God and Jesus Christ which is eternal life." How apostate is a culture that forgets God. One last point: I find it very ironic that on the same page as the call for respectful dialogue by Hanson, columnist Kathleen Parker calls the president a turkey. Wayne Baldridge Findlay To my liberal friends Please accept with no obligation, implied or explicit, my best wishes for an environmentally conscious, socially responsible, low-stress, non-addictive, gender-neutral celebration of the winter solstice holiday, practiced within the most enjoyable traditions of the religious persuasion of your choice, or secular practices of your choice, with respect for the religious/secular persuasion and/or traditions of others, or their choice not to practice religious or secular traditions at all. I also wish you a fiscally successful, personally fulfilling and medically uncomplicated recognition of the onset of the generally accepted calendar year 2021, but not without due respect for the calendars of choice of other cultures whose contributions to society have helped make America great. Not to imply that America is necessarily greater than any other country nor the only America in the Western Hemisphere. Also, this wish is made without regard to the race, creed, color, age, physical ability, religious faith or sexual preference of the wishee.
